Victorian Home Renovation and Extension

LOCATION
Hereford
SCOPE
Ground floor visualisation
The challenge
The clients were planning a complete renovation of the ground floor of their Victorian home, including a new rear extension. On the architectural plans, several areas felt tight and difficult to judge, leaving them unsure whether the proposed layout would work as intended once built.
Before committing to construction, they wanted greater confidence in the overall design, particularly how the new spaces would feel at true scale and how the extension would affect natural light throughout the existing house.
What we explored
We recreated the proposed ground floor in VR so the clients could experience the layout at true scale and better understand how each space would feel and connect.
Particular attention was given to the new open-plan kitchen and social area, where we developed the design further and explored how the space could work in everyday use. Karolina also provided design input, including alternative layouts for the downstairs bedroom and whether retaining the existing fireplace would help or restrict the room.
We compared different window styles within the extension, helping the clients assess both their appearance and the effect on natural light. The VR experience also made it possible to see how daylight would travel through the new extension and into the existing parts of the house.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
Having a 3D, (near) real world view of the monochrome, 2D graphics produced by architects and kitchen designers, coupled with the ability to visualise alternate colour schemes, was immensely helpful.
JOE SOAP
The outcome
Experiencing the proposed ground floor in VR gave the clients much greater confidence in the design before committing to construction.
Spaces that had appeared potentially tight on the architectural drawings could be assessed at true scale, while alternative layouts, window options, colour schemes and design ideas could be compared in context.
The process also helped resolve key decisions around the downstairs bedroom, social area and natural light within the extension, giving the clients confidence that the scheme would work before progressing with a build valued at over £120,000.
