The kitchen quickly became one of the most important areas of the project. Whilst the homeowners had already developed their own ideas for the layout, alternative arrangements were explored to better balance practicality, symmetry and the overall experience of the space. One proposal in particular repositioned the hob from the island to a more central focal point within the kitchen, creating a layout that felt both more functional and visually balanced. This ultimately became the preferred direction for the project.

Attention then turned to the relationship between the dining room and lounge. Different options were explored, including fully removing the wall between the two spaces and introducing a large opening that retained some separation whilst creating a stronger connection between the rooms. Experiencing both approaches in VR allowed the homeowners to compare the impact each option had on openness, flow and everyday living.

The lounge itself presented a unique challenge. The existing fireplace occupied a prominent position that limited furniture arrangements and made it difficult to create a comfortable layout around a television. Multiple options were tested, including layouts that retained the fireplace and alternatives that removed it entirely. Whilst initially reluctant to lose this feature, the homeowners were able to see that removing the fireplace created a significantly more flexible and balanced living space.

Alongside the layout studies, interior design concepts were developed throughout the home using inspiration provided by the homeowners. This helped translate mood boards and ideas into spaces they could experience at full scale, providing a clearer understanding of how their preferred design style could work within the character of their new home.
