When we began designing our own self-build home, we quickly discovered that making key decisions from 2D drawings alone was far more difficult than expected. While the plans looked convincing on paper, it was surprisingly hard to judge how the spaces would actually feel - how rooms connected, whether proportions were comfortable, or how the house would flow day to day.
Important choices about layout, window placement, ceiling heights, and the relationship between living spaces all carried long-term consequences, yet traditional drawings left too much open to interpretation. We found ourselves questioning decisions that would ultimately shape how the house would be lived in.
To gain a clearer understanding of the design, we created a detailed 3D model of the house and began exploring it in virtual reality. Being able to stand inside the spaces before they are built transformed the design process, allowing us to properly experience scale, light, and flow, and to test ideas with confidence in a risk-free environment.
What started as a way to design our own home ultimately became the foundation for Unreal Designs.
