Balancing The Elements of Web Development
There are plenty of elements that are crucial to the success of your web development. Nobody can argue that it takes talent in the way of graphic design, technical expertise, or in writing. At the end of the process, though, it’s the in-direct elements of web development that will determine th scope of its success. For beginners, it’s very important to hold a broader view of what web development success is.
Goals – Set yourself reasonable and attainable goals for your web development efforts. Don’t try implementing all your ideas at one time. Create some time-lines for yourself. Build the basic ideas first, then expand these out later on. Have some writing goals in place, like one page every week, or one blog post every day. Then set yourself some link building goals as well.
Maintenance – This doesn’t just refer to content, but to your overall web design and the sites infrastructure. Are your images optimized? Do you have an outdated design? Can all portions of the website still be used? Can any of these portions be made more user-friendly? Do you have any broken links?
Make Your Site a ‘Living’ Website – This means your site is updated regularly. You can update some of the pages daily, some of them monthly, other quarterly or yearly. Users can always tell when they’re getting old information. There are lots of sites that include time-stamps that say “Updated on …..” and show the date at the bottom of the pages. Even when your information is all correct, if it’s more than two years old the users will pick up on it quick and move on to something more current. When users find recently updated pages and information, they feel more secure about the fact that the webmaster hasn’t left the website.
Perseverance – Are you getting tired of content writing? Are you worn out with fixing problems like the Mozilla/IE CSS problem? Getting weary of link building? Have you become complacent about traffic building? The main factor for success in regard to web development and designing is perseverance. The ones who persevere and find a way to overcome the obstacles are the ones who find success. The might not be the best at designing or writing, or even good at marketing or promoting, but they are going to be the ones boasting of success.
Organize – Organization will go right along with goal setting. It won’t matter what your methods of organizing are just as long as you’re organized. This means that if you have post-it notes everywhere, at the edge of your monitor, or on your desktop, you’re not well organized. Just use a notebook for organizing your information.
Promotion – Let other people know about your website. Don’t sit back and expect the search engines to rush in and rank your site. The more people you tell about your site, the faster word will get out, and the more visitors you’ll have.
